**In short:** A drinks fridge that will not chill cans is usually set too warm, overloaded with warm drinks, short of air around its vents, losing cold through a poor door seal, or iced up on the back wall. Glass doors and warm rooms make it harder. Check the setting, airflow and seal first; if the compressor never runs or the back wall stays warm, contact the maker.

Beer and drinks fridges have a tougher job than they look. Glass doors let in heat, they are opened often, and many live in warm kitchens, garden rooms or bars. When cans come out lukewarm, the fix is often simple. This guide covers the common causes in order, from settings to faults, and applies to glass-door drinks fridges, beer fridges and small mini fridges.

## Check the setting and the thermometer

Many small drinks fridges have a dial numbered 1 to 7 or similar, where a higher number usually means colder, but not always. Check your manual. Digital models show a set temperature; make sure it is low enough, typically a few degrees above freezing for beer and soft drinks. Our [beer fridge temperature guide](https://corkandchill.co.uk/blog/beer-fridge-temperature) gives common settings.

Put a fridge thermometer in a glass of water on a middle shelf and read it after a few hours. That shows the real temperature of the drinks, not the air near the sensor.

## Overloading and warm stock

A fridge filled with room-temperature cans takes many hours to chill them all. Packing shelves tight also blocks the air that carries cold around the cabinet, so drinks at the front or top stay warmer. Leave small gaps between rows and away from the back wall.

When restocking for a party, add drinks in batches, or pre-chill some in an ice bucket. See [how to organise a drinks fridge](https://corkandchill.co.uk/blog/how-to-organise-a-drinks-fridge) for a layout that keeps air moving and [how long it takes to chill drinks](https://corkandchill.co.uk/blog/how-long-to-chill-wine-and-beer).

## Room temperature and ventilation

Every fridge has a climate class on its label, such as N or ST, showing the room range it is built for. In a hot conservatory or garden room in summer, a fridge outside its range may never reach its setting. In a very cold outbuilding, some fridges stop running often enough to stay cold.

Heat leaves through vents and the condenser, at the back or the front plinth depending on the model. If those are boxed in or dusty, cooling suffers. Leave the gaps the manual asks for, and vacuum the condenser and vents gently a couple of times a year.

## Door seal and glass door

A gap in the door seal lets warm air in all the time. Close the door on a sheet of paper at several points; if it slides out easily, the seal is not gripping. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water and check the fridge is level so the door swings shut.

Glass doors lose more heat than solid ones, so do not place a glass-door fridge in direct sun. Keep door openings short, especially on hot days.

## Ice on the back wall

A thin frost that melts between cycles is normal on many drinks fridges. Thick ice insulates the cold plate and stops it cooling the air. Defrost the fridge fully, clear the drain hole at the bottom of the back wall, and check the seal. See [frost-free vs manual defrost](https://corkandchill.co.uk/blog/frost-free-vs-manual-defrost-drinks-fridge) to understand your type.

1. Unplug and empty the fridge.
2. Leave the door open with towels below until all ice melts.
3. Clear the drain hole gently with the tool supplied or a soft pipe cleaner.
4. Dry, plug in, wait until cold, then reload.

## Signs of a fault

If the compressor at the back never runs, runs constantly with the back wall staying warm, or clicks on and off without cooling, the fault is probably in the cooling system or controls. A fridge that is warm all over with a working light may also have lost refrigerant.

Contact the maker or retailer with the model number, especially under warranty. If repair is uneconomical, see our [beer and drinks fridge guide](https://corkandchill.co.uk/best/best-beer-and-drinks-fridges) for replacements.

Note: Unplug the fridge before cleaning or moving it. Do not open control panels, wiring covers or the sealed cooling system; faults there need the maker's service team or a qualified engineer.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why is my beer fridge not cold enough?** Usually the setting, overloading, a warm room or blocked vents. Check each in turn.

**Which number is coldest on a mini fridge dial?** On most, the highest number. Check the manual, as some differ.

**Why is my drinks fridge cold at the bottom but warm at the top?** Warm air rises and some models have no fan. Leave gaps for airflow and keep the setting colder.

**How long should a new drinks fridge take to get cold?** Several hours empty. Load once it reaches temperature.
