A wine fridge that seems completely dead is worrying, but in many cases the fault is outside the fridge. UK plugs have a fuse, kitchen sockets are often on switched spurs, and some controls have lock or display modes that look like a fault. This guide works from the simplest checks to the ones that need a professional, and covers what to do with the wine while you sort it out.

First, protect the wine

Wine is not harmed by a few hours or even a day or two at normal room temperature, so there is no need to panic. If the fridge stays off, move bottles to the coolest dark place in the house, away from radiators and sunlight, and keep them lying down if they have natural corks.

Keep the door shut while you check the fridge, so any remaining cold stays inside.

Check the power supply

Work through these steps in order, starting with the socket rather than the fridge, since power faults are the most common cause.

  1. 1

Plug a lamp or phone charger into the same socket to see if the socket works.

  2. 2

Check whether the socket is controlled by a wall switch or a switched spur above the worktop, and that it is on.

  3. 3

Check your consumer unit for a tripped circuit breaker or RCD.

  4. 4

Avoid extension leads and adaptors; plug the fridge directly into a wall socket.

  5. 5

Replace the fuse in the plug with one of the rating stated in the manual, usually 13 A or as specified.

Note:If the plug, lead or socket shows scorch marks, smells of burning or feels hot, switch off at the wall and do not use it. Have it checked by a qualified electrician.

Display on but nothing happening

If the display lights but the fridge is not cooling, look for a padlock or key symbol. Many wine fridges have a child lock that stops buttons responding; the manual explains how to unlock, often by holding one button for a few seconds.

Some models have a display, showroom or demo mode that lights the panel without running the compressor. Others have a standby or on-off button separate from the plug. Check the manual for these, especially on a new fridge.

How to reset a wine fridge

Many people search for how to reset a wine cooler. On most models a reset simply means switching off at the wall, waiting several minutes, then switching back on. This clears temporary control glitches and gives a compressor that tripped on overheating a chance to restart.

After a reset, check the set temperature in each zone, as some models return to defaults. Then give it a few hours with the door closed. A new fridge, or one that has been moved, needs time; see how long a new wine fridge takes to get cold.

When it runs but will not cool

If the compressor hums or the fan runs but the cabinet stays warm, the fault is cooling rather than power. That has its own checklist covering venting, seals and room temperature in wine fridge not cooling. A dual-zone model with only one warm side is covered in one side not cooling.

Repeated clicking from the back, with the compressor trying and failing to start, usually means a starting relay or compressor fault. That is a job for the maker's service team.

When to call the maker

If power is fine and a reset does not help, contact the maker or retailer with the model and serial number, which are usually on a label inside the cabinet. Note any error code and what you have already checked. Under warranty, do not let anyone else open the unit, as that may void cover.

Note:Unplug the fridge before cleaning or moving it. Do not open control panels, wiring covers or the sealed cooling system; faults there need the maker's service team or a qualified engineer.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my wine fridge stop working suddenly? Most often a blown plug fuse, a tripped circuit or a switched-off spur. Check power first.

Does a wine fridge have a reset button? Few do. A reset usually means unplugging for several minutes and switching back on.

Can a power cut damage a wine fridge? Rarely, but a surge can blow the plug fuse. Check the fuse and settings after a power cut.

Is it safe to use an extension lead? Makers generally advise plugging directly into a wall socket. Check your manual.
