A built-in wine cooler must be front vented: it breathes through the grille in the plinth, so it can sit flush between units. A freestanding model pushed into a gap overheats, because it vents at the back.

Measure the gap's width, height and depth, and check the maker's minimum gaps. A 60 cm under-counter model typically holds 40 to 50 bottles; a slim 15 cm model holds about 7.

Common mistakes

  • Building a rear-vented freestanding cooler into a cabinet gap.
  • Measuring the opening without allowing for the worktop overhang or plinth height.
